Hackney joined Carlisle United from Woodley Sports in 2005

Colchester United have signed winger Simon Hackney from Carlisle United for an undisclosed six-figure fee.

The 24-year-old has signed a contract with the Essex club until 2011.

Colchester manager Paul Lambert told the club website: "I saw him play for Carlisle against Crewe while I was out of work at the beginning of the season.

"I've had him watched since then and just feel he can do a job for us at this level. He is direct and will add to what we already have in the squad."

The Cumbrians had turned down one offer from the U's before agreeing an improved bid last week.

Hackney, who began his career with Liverpool as a junior, made more than 100 appearances for Carlisle, scoring 17 times.
