Lawrence lauds Whalley
Cardiff boss Lennie Lawrence signed Gareth Whalley because of his "experience, high professional standards and ability".

The 28-year-old former Bradford midfielder became Cardiff's first close season signing.

Lawrence hopes Whalley will play a key role in helping the Bluebirds achieve promotion to the First Division.

Whalley was one of the players released by Bradford in May, having made over 100 appearances for the Bantams.

Lawrence said: "He'll bring experience, high professional standards and ability.

"He's a left-footed player who can link the play and he will bring something different to the party.

"We haven't got too many left-footers.

"We have got plenty of people who are comfortable going forward, but not too many who can get the ball off the back four and link the play.

"Gareth has played at a high level throughout his career and that's a factor.

"He's the right type for us - you just get an instinct about people.

"It was a big decision for him to come down into the Second Division when you have spent your entire career in a higher division.

"He took some persuading but he understands the ambition here and we need to be out of this division as quickly as we can. I'm positive he can help us do it."

Whalley began his career with Crewe Alexandra, a grooming that Lawrence feels has stood him in good stead.

The Bluebirds' boss said: "He's been with Dario Gradi at Crewe and that's a great introduction to the game."
