Cambridge United striker Daryl Clare eyes debut

Cambridge United frontman Daryl Clare says he is close to being fit enough to make his U's debut.

The 32-year-old spent the summer receiving treatment on a glute problem and was forced to sit out the 1-0 defeat at Wrexham on Saturday.

He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "We made a brave decision to deal with it during pre-season and it's proved to be a good decision.

"I think it will only be a game or two before I can get some match action in."

Clare was brought in from Gateshead, where he scored 13 times last season, with the sole purpose of firing the U's into a play-off position.

His goal record at other non-league outfits has created expectation among United fans.

"I feel that and I welcome it. I thrive on the pressure," he said.

"My job's to score goals and that's what I do.

"I wouldn't have joined Cambridge United if I didn't enjoy scoring goals."

Clare's former side Crawley Town, for whom he scored 11 times in 25 games, visit the Abbey on Tuesday but the striker is not expecting to play any part.
