Cambridge United have signed experienced striker Daryl Clare from Gateshead on a two-year deal which will cost the club £10,000.

The 32-year-old striker will undergo a medical on Tuesday.

U's manager Martin Ling told the club's website: "Strikers like this are hard to find and that is why we've had to pay a fee to Gateshead.

"I'm confident his fitness levels and game playing ratio will be up to what we require."

He started his career at Grimsby before spells at Northampton Town, Chester, Cheltenham and Burton Albion.

Clare scored 13 goals in 26 appearances for Gateshead last season.

"He's a one goal in two games striker at this level, and also the one above," said Ling.

"I feel he is more than an adequate replacement for Danny Crow.

"He'll come in and score the goals we need to be a successful side. If anyone reads the stats on him they'll see he will be the answer for this football club."
