Ling has asked fans to judge him after he has made his own side

Cambridge United should complete the signing of a new frontman by the end of the week, says boss Martin Ling.

The U's manager has made it his priority to land a goal-scorer after Danny Crow opted to join Luton at the end of the season.

Ling told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "There are three players in the melting pot and I would hope it to be sorted by Thursday or Friday.

"There's still a few little issues with players and clubs to run its course."

Ling added Histon striker Danny Wright to his squad in May but has made it clear he is still in talks with his number one target.

"He's still in the melting pot, there's still a couple of stumbling blocks on him but it isn't a 'no' at the moment," Ling said.

"There is a fee involved and that's where it muddies the water a little bit more. It's moving but it's inching forward.

He continued: "It's not a dead end, you just have to be patient in these situations to make sure you get the right reward in the end."

Wright has been one of numerous players to leave Histon so far this summer and boss John Beck is facing the possibility of using youth players to make up his squad.

But Ling is not full of sympathy for his Cambridgeshire rivals and has ruled out the possibility of loaning them players.

"I know over the years there is no love loss between the two clubs," he said.

"If we're going to loan some out we're probably going to choose to loan them elsewhere.

"I don't think helping your local rivals with loanees is the way forward."
