Brown targets more starts for U's

Cambridge United midfielder Danny Brown has admitted he was surprised to be given a starting place for the 2-0 win over Wrexham on Saturday.

The 27-year-old had an operation on his shoulder during the close season but was hurried back into the side due to injuries and suspensions.

But Brown told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "It's not 100% and I haven't regained full strength in it.

"Otherwise, I'm probably the best I've felt in a long while to be honest."

Brown said he was not banking on another start against Torquay this Saturday with Ben Farrell returning from suspension.

There's a lot of competition for places now and a lot of players, so I don't think anyone should be too secure about whether they're playing or not

"With players coming back from injury and suspension I certainly am not counting on playing," he said.

"I'm just training this week and if I'm in the team then I get the chance to prove myself again.

"There's a lot of competition for places now and a lot of players, so I don't think anyone should be too secure about whether they're playing or not."

Having been placed on the transfer list by former manager Jimmy Quinn at the end of last season, Brown said he was delighted he had been given another chance under new boss Gary Brabin.

He said: "I was told I could leave and I was in the middle of sorting out a contract to go to Stevenage.

"I got a phone call from the club saying 'Jimmy Quinn's left and we want you back in the club'.

"So, I got my head down, put in the hours and I'm at he point where I am now."
