Gerken played two seasons in the Championship with Colchester
Bristol City's Dean Gerken plans to take full advantage of the unexpected opportunity to start the season as the club's number one goalkeeper.
The 24-year-old arrived expecting to be back-up to Adriano Basso, who has since handed in a transfer request.
"I knew it would be a hard task to get the number one jersey from Basso, but all you can do it look after yourself," he told BBC Radio Bristol.
"When the opportunity comes you have to take it with both hands."
With Basso still on the transfer-list and Stephen Henderson recovering from a fractured toe, Gerken has the chance to establish himself between the posts.
"If you can get in and cement your place with solid performances you could have it for the rest of the season," added the former Colchester stopper.
"Bristol City is a big club and there will be competition for places this season."
