Gerken impressed Johnson in two Championship matches against City
Bristol City have signed Colchester keeper Dean Gerken on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
The 24-year-old joins Brazilian Adriano Basso and Irishman Stephen Henderson in the Robins goalkeeping ranks.
"We've always liked him. He's the one we think can push Adriano Basso all the way for the number one spot," manager Gary Johnson told BBC Radio Bristol.
The 6ft 3ins man made 127 appearances in all competitions for Colchester over a seven-year period.
"He's a good acquisition and has already played 60/70 odd games for Colchester in the Championship so is very experienced," added Johnson.
"He's a big lad and kicks well and I'm pleased to have acquired his services."
Gerken is the Robins' third signing in as many days and manager Gary Johnson says could be more this week.
"We've had our targets and they normally come to fruition round about the time we come back for pre-season training.
"I've said to people be patient and there could be one or two more on the go in the next couple of days."
