Bradford City manager Stuart McCall is confident Joe Colbeck will sign a new contract this week.
The 21-year-old winger is the last of the existing squad to agree new terms but McCall has said that is down to the club and not the player.
"Because Joe comes up to 24 in a few years' time the club have to safeguard that, so he doesn't leave for nothing," McCall told BBC Radio Leeds.
"Joe loves this club and should sign a new deal in the next few days."
McCall added: "It's about getting the right length of contract and the details right to ensure he doesn't walk away from the club for free in a few years' time."
We've done everything possible to get him here again, but I think he will be joining a high division club
Bradford manager Stuart McCall on former loanee Dean Furman
The Bradford boss met with joint-chairman Julian Rhodes on Monday to discuss Colbeck's new deal, but is not so hopeful of bringing former loanee Dean Furman back to Valley Parade.
The South African midfielder impressed last season during his loan spell from Scottish Premier League champions Rangers.
"We've done everything possible to get him here again, but I think he will be joining a high division club unfortunately," he said.
"That's if those clubs can come up with the money Rangers are asking for.
"We've waited a little while and hoped we could get him, but as much as we've tried I don't think we'll get him back."
