Barnsley have made their third signing of the summer by bringing in Serbian midfielder Goran Lovre from Dutch side Groningen on a two-year deal.
Lovre was close to arriving in English football when Johan Boskamp was in charge at Stoke City in 2005.
But Lovre, 28, now comes in at the same level, having turned down rival interest from other clubs in both the Championship and the Premier League.
The deal will officially go through on 1 July.
Lovre started his career in Belgium at Anderlecht, where he spent eight years.
Having left on a free transfer in May 2006, Zagreb-born Lovre spent the last four seasons at Groningen, who finished eighth in the Dutch top flight this term.
Barnsley boss Mark Robins has so far completed two other deals, bringing in Wolves defender Jason Shackell and Motherwell winger Jim O'Brien.
