Barnsley are considering backing out of a deal to sign Charlton Athletic striker Andy Gray.
The clubs and the player agreed terms last month, but because the London club is in the process of a takeover they are under a transfer embargo.
"Patience is wearing a bit thin at the moment. We have a deadline in which the deal needs to be done," Reds boss Simon Davey told BBC Radio Sheffield.
"The takeover was supposed to happen and it didn't."

He added: "As we get nearer to the end of the transfer window we become impatient.
"We have determined a deadline where we can draw a line under it and go and get someone else. We haven't reached it yet, but we are very close."
Barnsley will also enter talks with Reggina's Icelandic midfielder Emil Hallfredsson at Oakwell before Saturday's game against Coventry.
