COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Basingstoke: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY THREE: Hampshire 250 and 75-2, Yorkshire 524 (Yorks 7pts, Hants 4pts) 11-14 August 2009
Rashid's previous top score was 111 against Sussex last summer |
Adil Rashid hit a career-best 117 not out to give Yorkshire the chance of securing a first championship win in 20 attempts against Hampshire. Yorkshire began day three at Basingstoke 23 ahead on 273-7. But Rashid and Ajmal Shazad, who also hit a career-best 78, shared 192 for the eighth wicket as the Tykes were eventually bowled out for 524. Hampshire slumped to 10-2 in their second innings before closing on 75-2, still 199 runs behind. Jimmy Adams and Michael Lumb were the two Hampshire wickets to fall, both to Tim Bresnan. The forgotten England all-rounder knocked back Adams' off stump before trapping Lumb leg before playing from the crease in his next over. Hampshire's plight could have been worse had Bresnan not put down a difficult chance offered by James Vince at third slip off Deon Kruis. Vince made the most of that let-off by finishing the day unbeaten on 27, with in-form opener Michael Carberry 41 not out. But the day belonged to Rashid and Shahzad as they shared a record eighth-wicket partnership for Yorkshire against Hampshire. Shahzad, whose previous highest score was 41, was put down at mid-off and then in the slips before he had made 30. And he punished Hampshire by hitting Imran Tahir for sixes as Yorkshire secured four batting points. He was finally out with the score on 460-8, but Rashid, who was also missed in the slips by Liam Dawson and Sean Ervine, went on to complete his third career century with a late cut off Tahir. Matthew Hoggard gave Chris Tremlett his second wicket of the innings when he drove to Dimitri Mascarenhas at mid-off. But Hampshire's misery was not over as last man Kruis helped Rashid add 36 before being trapped leg before by Tahir for 26. His dismissal meant Yorkshire claimed a first-innings lead of 274, leaving Hampshire with the task of batting out the final day to salvage a draw.
