COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Basingstoke: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Hampshire 250, Yorkshire 13-0 (Yorks 3pts, Hants 2pts) 11-14 August 2009
Ajmal Shahzad was a mid-season target for struggling Worcestershire |
Ajmal Shahzad took three wickets in an over to tip the balance in Yorkshire's favour on the first day against relegation rivals Hampshire. Shahzad had Dimitri Mascarenhas caught behind off his first delivery at Basingstoke, then knocked back Chris Tremlett's off stump next ball. Imran Tahir averted the hat-trick but with the last ball of the over Shahzad had wicket-keeper Tom Burrows lbw. Shahzad finished with 4-72 as Hants made 250, the Tykes replying on 13-0. Tim Bresnan supported Shahzad with 3-45 and there were also two wickets for Deon Kruis on a low and slow wicket which helped the bowlers. Jimmy Adams was Hampshire's top scorer with 79 but batting was never easy. Yorkshire, just one off the bottom, started the game seven points adrift of safety and only 15 behind sixth-placed Hampshire.
