The 18-year-old, who has made just two first-team starts for Scottish First Division strugglers Alloa Athletic, is heading for a three-week trial in Spain over Christmas. And the midfielder has already given up his job as an apprentice mechanic to make the most of his chance of a lifetime with the La Liga outfit. Stevenson, who was released by Aberdeen two years ago for being too small, thought he was the victim of a wind-up when he was approached by a man introducing himself as Paco and claiming to be a Real coach.
"We were messing about on the sideline and I kept trying to nutmeg him. "The next thing I knew, a guy approached me and asked 'how would you like a trial at Real Mallorca?' "I thought he was joking, but a few weeks after I got back to Scotland, an e-mail dropped in Spanish. When we translated it, they were asking for me to go over. "It is every schoolboy's dream and I can't believe this is happening to me." Stevenson flew to Spain and spent 10 days last month with Real, where he had problems with the language barrier. "But somehow I managed to get by with the basics," he said. "I scored seven goals in three Under-18 games, so I think that did most of the talking for me." He also played in a bounce game against the first team and was in direct opposition to former Barcelona and Spain star Nadal.
"I remember arriving at the training ground and seeing the first-team players drive up in their Ferraris and thinking 'what is an 18-year-old guy fae Alloa, who drives a poxy Astra, doing here?' "They wanted me to stay on for the rest of the season, but I had to come back and sort things out here." Stevenson claims he had no nerves rubbing shoulders with the likes of Cameroon World Cup star Samuel Eto'o. The Scot does admit that the prospect of swapping Alloa's Recreation Park for what is probably the world's best league has him excited. "I may even one day be on the same pitch as Ronaldo - now that would make me a wee bit nervous," he concluded. | Top Alloa stories now: Links to more Alloa stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
