Player's drug ban reduced
A Caernarfon Town player who became the first from the League of Wales to be banned for failing a drug test has had his penalty reduced on appeal.

Danny McGoona was banned for nine months by a Football Association of Wales disciplinary committee after he tested positive for amphetamine following a game against Rhyl in March.

But that penalty was reduced to a six months ban after the club told the appeal hearing that McGoona's drink had been spiked at a Swansea nightclub.

The original 100 fine will remain.

Caernarfon Town secretary Ian Sixsmith said: "It is unfortunate that the rules do not allow for mitigating circumstances.

"Mr McGoona would like to thank everybody who supported him during a very difficult time."

New recruits

Sixsmith added that McGoona, who works as an ambulance paramedic, would remain with the club and would resume playing again in the New Year.

McGoona has played for several League of Wales clubs, including spells at Bangor City and Conwy United.

Meanwhile, Caernarfon have secured the services of their prolific strikeforce for another year.

Tommy Mutton and Danny Barton, who scored 47 goals between them last season, have signed new contracts despite attracting interest from other League of Wales clubs.

Caernarfon manager Adie Jones has also secured the signature of proven goalscorer Frank Mottram.

Mottram, who won the championship twice with Bangor City, is the 10th highest goalscorer in the League of Wales history.
