| Thursday, 10 October, 2002, 19:21 GMT 20:21 UK Davies named Welsh player of year ![]() Simon Davies: Welsh Footballer of the Year Talented Tottenham youngster Simon Davies has been voted the Wales Footballer of the Year. He received the award at a star-studded FA of Wales dinner at the Vale of Glamorgan Hotel. The 23-year-old's wonder goal against Croatia, his first international effort, signalled his arrival as a major force on the world stage. The silky-skilled midfielder added another in Wales' opening Euro 2004 win in Finland, and the 10-cap man is now a fixture in the Welsh team.
He moved to White Hart Lane from Peterborough for 700,000 nearly three years ago, and has 13 goals from 51 appearances for the club. Davies wins the vote ahead of Newcastle's Craig Bellamy and Celtic's John Hartson, who claimed the award last year. Other awards Cardiff City's Robert Earnshaw wins the Young Player of the Year award. His spectacular goal against Germany last season earned a famous win for Wales, and his trademark celebration caught the attention of the world press ahead of the summer's World Cup. Unfortunately, the striker was too unwell to collect the award. He should recover in time to play for the Bluebirds on Saturday.
Earnshaw's team mate Danny Gabbidon was the other leading contender for the young player vote, but he has the consolation of the clubman of the year award. Gabbidon stepped into the central defensive breach for Wales against Finland after Robert Page's injury. His impact was such that he looks to be an automatic selection for next week's big game with Italy. The merit awards were awarded to Bangor City's long-serving president Gwyn Pierce Owen, and to Stewart Williams, a former Wales full back who played in the 1958 World Cup team. |
