Bowen still has Wales hope
Birmingham City coach Mark Bowen with manager Steve Bruce

Wales v Italy | Wed 16 October Kick-off 1945 BST | Live on BBC Wales, BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru and BBC Sport Online

Mark Bowen is still clinging on to the hope of continuing as Wales assistant coach despite being forced to miss a third successive international match.

Birmingham manager Steve Bruce has refused to give Bowen permission to join up with Wales as they prepare for next week's Euro 2004 qualifier with Italy.

Bruce wants Bowen to concentrate solely on helping him guarantee Premiership survival for City.

The 38-year-old missed last month's Euro opener against Finland and the August friendly against Croatia, and Hughes seems to have lost patience with Birmingham in trying to find a compromise.

Bowen admitted to being "heartbroken" at missing the Italy game, but he still believes he will be able to help out in some capacity in the future.

"I understand Steve's feelings over this and I respect them as well," he said.

"Of course, long-term, I hope that I would be able to get involved with the international set-up again.

"I would hate to think that I was closing the door on Wales forever, because it means so much to me.

"Steve has every reason to make his feelings known and I accept his point of view entirely."

Former Wales goalkeeper Eddie Niedzwiecki, a respected coach in his own right, will again fill the void left by Bowen.

And with former Manchester United youth coach Eric Harrison also on hand, Hughes says he has no immediate plans to recruit anyone else.

"That may change in the future if I feel there's a problem but Mark (Bowen) has not been with us for the last two games and we've been okay," Hughes admitted.

"There are occasions when it would have been better if Mark had been with us, but we've coped up to this point so at the moment I'm quite happy to leave it as it is."

Chris Coleman, who retired from playing recently because of injury, has joined the coaching staff at the Wales training camp in Cardiff this week.

The 32-times capped player will soon be working with the Wales under-21 squad, as well as youth teams at his club Fulham.
