Bowen to miss Finland trip
Birmingham City coach Mark Bowen with manager Steve Bruce
Bruce (right) says Bowen's priorities lie with Birmingham
Wales manager Mark Hughes will be without two of his coaching assistants for the Euro 2004 qualifier in Finland.

Mark Bowen, who is also first team coach at Premiership newcomers Birmingham City, and Eric Harrison will not be making the trip to Helsinki for the match on 7 September.

The pair also missed Wales' recent friendly in Croatia.

According to the Football Association of Wales, Bowen will still take a full part in the squad's training camp in Cardiff in the days leading up to the fixture.

But Birmingham manager Steve Bruce has stressed that club affairs must take priority and suggested the time may have come for Bowen to relinquish all ties with Wales.

It is going to be very difficult for Mark to do the two roles
Blues manager Steve Bruce
Bruce said: "It is a difficult one. I don't really want to stop Mark (with Wales) and he's done very well with them.

"But his priority is with us and it is very difficult for him to be away from the club for a long, long period.

"Mark understands that and at the moment we've just said that we're a Premiership team and we've got to make sure his allegiance stays with us.

"Wales are away again next week and we can't have Mark away for four to five days. He is too important for us here.

"It is fair to say that it is going to be very difficult for Mark to do the two roles. I've spoken to Mark Hughes and he realises that.

"He realises the situation and he understands and Mark Bowen is realistic and he understands as well."

Downscale

Bowen is known to be keen to prolong his involvement with the Wales set-up for as long as possible.

He suggested the best solution may be to look at the situation on a game-to-game basis.

But whatever the eventual outcome, Bowen will certainly be forced to scale down his international duties.

Harrison, meanwhile, has been advised not to travel to Finland on medical grounds.
