Predicted Wales team to face Italy
John Hartson and Andy Melville
Some of Wales' stars are out of favour at their clubs
Wales v Italy | Wed 16 October Kick-off 1945 BST | Live on BBC Wales, BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru and BBC Sport Online

Who will Mark Hughes choose for the big European Championship qualifier?

See our predictions, watch this page for updates as the news comes through, and pick your team.

Goalkeeper - Paul Jones (Southampton)
The big shot-stopper has lost his place at Southampton after some unfortunate blunders, but Jones has always been Hughes' number one and that isn't about to change

Right back - Mark Delaney (Aston Villa)
Delaney has been relegated to the bench by the attacking force of Ulises de la Cruz at Villa. His defensive skills are not in doubt, though, and his place is assured

Centre back - Danny Gabbidon (Cardiff)
A classy display against Finland meant that the injured Robert Page was not missed. Has the assurity and composure for international football

Centre back - Andy Melville (Fulham)
The Fulham and Wales veteran has been in and out of his club side and will be anxious to prove a point against the Azzurri. Partnership with Gabiddon shows encouraging signs

Left back - Gary Speed (Newcastle, capt)
Left back may not be his favourite position, but the captain will do a job for his country wherever he is chosen. Newcastle manager Bobby Robson has described him as one of his most important players this season

Right midfield - Craig Bellamy (Newcastle)
Has not hit top gear since his return from a knee injury, but Bellamy has the speed and skills to break even the best defence

Midfield - Mark Pembridge (Everton)
The industry of Pembridge and Savage will be crucial to Wales' cause. They must stop the Italians settling on the ball

Midfield - Robbie Savage (Birmingham City)
There's no Paolo Maldini to annoy this time, but Savage is sure to upset any Italians he gets near in the middle of the park. Worked tirelessly against Finland

Midfield - Simon Davies (Tottenham)
The rising star of the Welsh team. Has the class to compete at this level - what the fans would give for a repeat of his wonder-goal against Croatia

Left midfield - Ryan Giggs (Manchester United)
Fresh from his 450th appearance for United, Giggs is keen to extend his legacy on the international circuit. The Italians fear and respect him - now is the time for Giggs to inspire his country to glory

Striker - John Hartson (Celtic)
Another of Wales' stars out of favour at club level. Hartson has been supreme for his country under Hughes, though. Create the chances and he will bang them in
