| Friday, 11 October, 2002, 16:39 GMT 17:39 UK Who should Wales pick against Italy? ![]() Who should Mark Hughes pick for Wales in their crucial European Championship qualifier against Italy? We've given our predictions for the team as Wales prepare for their biggest game since 1993, will Sparky get selection right? Should he be bold and go for the win, or play it safe against the Group Nine favourites? There are a number of Welsh stars sitting on the bench at their clubs - should this affect their chances of international selection? Who would you choose in the team? This debate is now closed. A selection of your e-mails appear below. Surely Andy Johnson has to be ahead of Mark Pembridge in midfield - younger, fitter and more creative (also playing regularly in the Premiership). How can any Welsh fan suggest dropping Bellamy? His finishing isn't the best but he still gets goals in the Premiership, two divisions up from Earnshaw. He makes things happen, persistently gets behind the defence and his pace terrifies defenders. He is pure class and, Giggs aside, the best player in Wales. If Wales are to win they need Bella. Play Hartson up front with Giggs and Bellamy playing either side, attacking from midfield. Savage, Davies and Pembridge filling out a five man midfield and Speedo, Melville, Delaney, Gabbidon and then Jones in goal. Stop them attacking and then hit them on the counter.
Daffy Jones, Newport, Wales Personally I'd bench Giggs and keep him benched until he shows up at less glamorous matches. Sure it hurts the team in the short term, but him strolling into the team every now and then unsettles the team more than it is worth. Surely after the way Sparky's got the team organised over the last year or so, you can't start thinking about any other formation than the 4-2-3-1 line-up that's seen us unbeaten in the last six matches. It enables all our best players to play (with the exception of Earnshaw who can be brought on as a super-sub) and enables a quick switch from a 4-5-1 to 4-2-4 - defence to attack. I'd pick Earnie ahead of Craig Bellamy. Wales won't have many chances and at the end of the day scoring a goal is slotting the ball past the goalie and into the net whether you play in Division Two or the World Cup. If we get three chances all game, we'll do well we need the man most likely to score and that right now is Earnshaw. The rest of the team and the formation should be as Sparky has had it over the recent games, it works, makes us tough to score against.
Wales should stick with the 4-5-1 formation to soak up the Italian attack and counter attack with pace. I am going to the match and I am expecting a top class performance from Wales regardless of the result. As long as Simon Davies, Ryan Giggs and John Hartson start, and the rest put in 110% then who knows?! Robbie is playing great football at the moment and is scoring goals. Either play him and Johno up front with Bellamy, Giggs down the wings or swap Bellamy and Earnie over. I would choose Jones (or possibly Crossley); LB - Speedo, CB Melvile Gabbidon, RB Dellany; LW Giggs Mid: Savage Davies, RW Earnie or Bellamy, Str Hartson, Eanie or Bellamy We must play with five in midfield to stop the Italians settling on the ball. The counter attacking skills and pace of Davies, Giggs and Bellamy will prove crucial.
Having seen the welsh side develop as a team over the past year with a mixture of youth and experience I would not question Hughes' selection whoever he picks. In their last four to five games Wales have looked a tough side to brake down and with players like Giggs and Davis they often look like scoring on the counter. Hughes will have to remember that this will be their toughest game to date and he must not get carried away with hard fought results in friendly matches, but maybe there is a shock in store in Cardiff on Wednesday? Surely Bellamy and Big John up front, get at the Italians from kick-off. They won't know what's hit 'em when Robbie La gets stuck in. Sparky should go with a team that can contain the likes of Del Piero but that's got enough guile and experience to trouble Nesta and co. For that reason Savage is a must, him and Pembridge dominate games so effectively now. So a straight pick between Bellamy and Earnshaw for the wide right hand side role. I'd personally go with Bellamy - he's more experienced, works well with Hartson and has shown on numerous occasions he's a big game player. Earnshaw to come off the bench and score an 85th minute winner. Play Hartson up front on his own, and then bring Bellamy and Earnshaw on in the second half to increase the tempo. Italy will overpower us in midfield and so we have to catch them with pace on the counter attack.
Jones is the keeper without doubt, but the defence is a tough one. Gabbidon would be a wise selection, and Delaney is performing well. Speed at left back. Giggs, Savage, Davies and Pembridge in midfield. Earnie and Bellamy up front. The Italians will crumble! Wales think that they can qualify for Euro 2004, but they are slightly delusional. They may have beaten Finland but beating Yugoslavia and Italy is another thing altogether. Hartson and Bellamy up front, with a midfield of Giggs-Savage-Speed-and Davies. I think it is too big a game for Earnshaw. Now I've said that he'll probably start and get a hat-trick (here's hoping). Little Robbie Earnshaw is flying for the Bluebirds. We've got to be bold and go for the win if we want to have a chance of qualifying from this group. Play Hartson and Earnshaw up front, get Giggs and Bellamy blasting down the flanks, then have Simon Davies and Pembridge in midfield. |
