Who is going to get Sven's job?
KEY DATES
FA chief executive Brian Barwick
10/03 - FA meets with Curbishley for informal discussions
27/02 - Three-man team report to FA chairman Geoff Thompson
02/02 - The FA appoints three-man team to find new boss
26/01 - Barwick signals intention to appoint successor before World Cup
23/01 - Eriksson reveals he will stand down after World Cup
The Football Association's search for a successor to Sven-Goran Eriksson is under way.

The Swede will step down after the World Cup finals in Germany this summer.

FA chief executive Brian Barwick (pictured right), international committee chairman Noel White and Premier League chairman Dave Richards are the three men who have been appointed to find a new boss.

BBC Sport rounds up the latest news and speculation surrounding the vacant England job.

31 MARCH:

The Sun has reported that prospective candidates for the England job will be asked whether they will keep David Beckham on as captain.

The topic could be a major issue as any move to relieve Beckham of his role could have an impact in terms of lowering the sponsorship money the Football Association may get.

Beckham's credentials to skipper the national team have been questioned in some quarters, especially with his place coming under threat following the emergence of right winger Shaun Wright-Phillips.

But, with Wright-Phillips struggling for first-team football at Chelsea and Beckham's impressive form this season, the pressure has eased on the Real Madrid star.

Meanwhile, another possible England candidate in Gerard Houllier has been linked with the vacant Newcastle post and the Frenchman appears to prefer Tyneside to Soho Square.

WHAT ARE THE MANAGERS SAYING?

Gerard Houllier:
29 March - "I have not put my name forward and I have not been interviewed."

Sam Allardyce:
26 March - "I don't think there is another manager in this country who has achieved as much as I have."

Guus Hiddink:
24 March - "I've decided to stop as trainer with PSV at the end of this season, and that's about it."

Peter Taylor:
24 March - "My meeting was about the role, but I'm sure Alan Curbishley's meeting would have been for the role."

Fabio Capello:
24 March - "Within three years I will pack in coaching at club level and then I want to realise the dream I have always had inside me - England."

Luiz Felipe Scolari:
23 March - "I had an informal meeting with the English federation. I do not feel I am in a race to be the next England boss."

Alan Curbishley:
22 March - "I'm sure it will be stepped up in the next couple of weeks but I don't think anyone knows how."

Steve McClaren:
15 March - Studiously avoided answering questions about the latest speculation surrounding the England job before his Middlesbrough team beat Roma to reach the Uefa Cup quarter-finals.

Stuart Pearce:
13 March - "England is not a distraction for me, I don't take a great deal of interest in it."

WHAT ARE YOU SAYING?

  • Send us your comments about the England manager's job using the form below and we will post a selection here.

We need someone with at least some insight into getting our lads to play creatively if we're ever going to topple the likes of Brazil and Germany on a regualr basis.
    Tom Craven, United Kingdom

I think wherever you go football is played with a different emphasis, skill in spain, tactical in italy etc. In England the focus is on passion so I think it should be a British manager or someone who has worked in British football for a long time.
    LJ Davies, England

You are talking about a national team and you would need managers who have at least champions league experience. For me, O'Neil is the best choice.
    Randy R, UK

We have to look around the world for the best and sadly there is no Englishman good enough yet. I would love to see Pearce take on the role in time and he should be working now with the best that we can get.
    Mike, England

I have the greatest respect for the achievements of Sam Allardyce, Alan Curbishly and Stuart Pearce but think it is too much of a gamble to expect them to translate their success to the international set up.
    Colin Bevis, Australia

If Fabio Capello is genuinely interested, then the FA would be mad not to offer him the job. Although he has no international experience, he has been a success for every club he has worked for.
    Ciaran Madden, Ireland

I think that Martin O'Neill would be the perfect manager as he knows the English game inside out and learned his trade from the best in Brian Clough.
    Neil Brookes, Australia

Kevin Keegan did a great job at club football with Newcastle but what did he do for England? It takes more than a good club manager to be sucessful at international level these days.
    Dave , Prudhoe, England

If only Arsene Wenger and Alex Ferguson were available then England would be top two in the world. But I'll go for Alan Curbishley with Stuart Pearce as number two.
    Stephen Ogundere, UK

The main issues for any England manager is the ridiculous behaviour of your press and the unfounded and excessive expectation levels of fans and media alike.
    Mike, Scotland
