| Saturday, 10 August, 2002, 17:17 GMT 18:17 UK Carlisle 1-3 Hartlepool Carlisle's opening-day carnival was ruined with a defeat to Hartlepool in front of a 10,000-plus crowd. The first goal for the visitors came after 43 minutes when Eifion Williams' shot was blocked and the rebound ran to Mark Tinkler. He stroked the ball past Carlisle keeper Peter Keen from eight yards. The second came just two minutes into the second half. Carlisle midfielder Michael Jack failed to control the ball in the area, presenting it to Ritchie Humphreys, who gratefully tucked it into the net. Pool went 3-0 up when a Darrell Clarke pass was knocked back by substitute Paul Arnison and the Carlisle defence stood watching as Tinkler tucked away his second goal. Carlisle did pull a goal back after 80 minutes. Brian Wake, on his debut, was sent away down the left by Mick Galloway to angle a 15-yard shot past keeper Tony Williams. |
