Simon Downer - Leyton Orient Downer is a 21-year-old defender who made his debut in 1999 and has since been attracting an increasing number of scouts to Brisbane Road. Extremely mature for his age, Downer is not only strong in the air but accomplished on the ground and destined to play at a higher level. Orient chairman Barry Hearn has already commented on Downer's future - insisting that the player will only be leaving for the right price. Richie Foran - Carlisle United Foran arrived at Brunton Park from Shelbourne in August 2001 and scored 16 goals in his first season in English football.
However, it is for his footballing ability that Foran has begun to build his reputation. Committed, quick and powerful, Foran also boasts more than a little skill on the ball. Luke Rogers - Shrewsbury Town Rogers scored a bagful of goals last season - and more are expected this campaign from the hottest young talent to emerge at Shrewsbury in years. It is no coincidence that the Shrews - who normally find the Football League something of a struggle - only just missed out on the play-offs last season while Rogers found the back of the net 22 times. He has expressed a desire to play at the highest level possible and if he continues to demonstrate his instinctive flair for goals he seems certain to get his wish. Jamie Brooks - Oxford United Brooks came through the ranks at Oxford and started to make an impression on the first-team last season.
He is set to miss the first part of the campaign through a viral illness but is sure to figure in manager Ian Atkins' plans on his recovery - and on the basis of the potential he has already shown he should be able to do so. Kevin Townson - Rochdale Townson started 20 games last season and finished as the club's top scorer with 17 goals.
The young striker was originally on the books at Everton but, after being released by the Merseyside club, was quickly snapped up by Dale. Townson, like Rogers, has a real eye for goal and is sure to be a key player to Rochdale's hopes of winning promotion to Division Two. Daryl Clare - Boston United It was Clare's 25 goals that proved instrumental as Boston won promotion to Division Three.
Clare played with renewed confidence last season and was rewarded with both the club and Conference Player of the Year awards. It will be fascinating to see how Clare progresses on his return to the Football League. |
