Harrogate Town responded to their shock 5-1 defeat by Droylsden with a 2-0 win over Workington at the CNG Stadium.
After a mediocre first half, goals from Richard Marshall and Graeme Armstrong lifted Town back up to 12th in Blue Square Bet North.
Town manager Simon Weaver told BBC Radio York: "It was an excellent performance, it took mental resolve to get over the negativity of Droylsden.
"To be contenders next year is my aim and the club's aim."
Weaver made it clear to his players that their response to the Droylsden thrashing could prove critical.
"The challenge to them was to realign my thoughts for the retention list, which will be drawn up in the next ten days.
"The Droylsden performance refreshed bad memories of the earlier season displays when we went down by four or five goals.
"That can't happen if we're to be contenders next year, so I said that's the challenge, sort it out among yourselves and for the fans.
"We want more season ticket sales, more people through the door and a good atmosphere here."
Town have one more game to complete their campaign, a trip to AFC Telford, who still need a point to ensure they finish second.
"They'll be going into the play-offs, but we've got a job to do.
"The performances at home haven't been mirrored by away performances, and that's the difference between being a middle-of-the-range team and one at the top end."
