Nicky Law thrilled with Alfreton victory at Cambridge

Nicky Law
Law's Alfreton have only lost one Blue Square Bet North game this season

Alfreton Town boss Nicky Law hailed his side's spirit and resilience after the 6-3 FA Trophy win at Blue Square Bet Premier Division side Cambridge United.

The Blue Square North league leaders were denied victory in Saturday's 3-3 home draw in the first-round tie.

But Paul Clayton grabbed a hat-trick as Alfreton secured a thrilling extra-time win in Cambridgeshire.

Law said: "My players were brilliant. It was a seventh game in 18 days. But they don't know when they are beaten."

Josh Low, Anton Brown and Laurie Wilson were also on target for the Reds, who now face a mouth-watering second-round tie against local rivals Mansfield Town on 5 February.

"I can't speak highly enough of them," Law added. "The effort they have put in over the first 18 days of the month has been incredible.

"We knew they [Cambridge] would have lots of possession and it was all about hard work off the ball for us.

"They are a very good side with four or five players you would take at the drop of a hat. But, come the end of the game, they looked like they were dead on their feet and we were still going for more goals."
