Manager Ling frustrated by Cambridge United's progress

Ling has been left frustrated by the U's recent inconsistent form

Cambridge United boss Martin Ling has admitted he is very frustrated by his side's inconsistent form.

The U's crashed out of the FA Trophy in dramatic style thanks to a 6-3 extra time defeat by Alfreton in their second round replay on Tuesday night.

Ling told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "Every time we get in a position to do something we seem to fail, so we need to look at ourselves in the mirrors.

"Every time we get up a head of steam it seems to turn into a crisis."

The U's, who are currently 12th in the Blue Square Bet Premier table, are 10 points off the play-off places but have won their last two league matches.

And Ling believes they can still make the play-offs, but with two heavy defeats in the past three home matches he admits the side need to find consistency.

"You have to be able to stand up and pass the ball, but for half an hour we were useless," he said.

"We've got players who want the ball to feet so we have to move the ball and pass it with tempo and purpose."
