Redditch United opened their new Blue Square Bet North campaign with a 2-0 defeat against Stalybridge Celtic.
Phil Marsh and Jody Banim scored the goals early in the first half to seal victory for Stalybridge against a young Redditch side at Bower Fold.
Reds manager Matt Gardiner told BBC Hereford & Worcester: "It's always a difficult place to come.
"But many of my players are at this level for the first time and they showed good character," he added.
"There is stuff that we can build on for the rest of the season."
