Staines Town beat Lewes 1-0 on the opening day of the new Blue Square Bet South season.
Leroy Griffiths scored the only goal of the game in the 39th minute to give Staines a winning start.
Lewes had given debuts to five players including goalkeeper Chris Winterton and striker Rob Gradwell.
Staines, in their second season at this level, blooded 20-year-old left-back Rene Steer in place of Dominic Stirling and defender Michael Kamara.
Staines manager Steve Cordery told BBC Surrey: "With all due respect to them, they didn't really cause us any major problems, but we didn't really do enough going forward, and didn't do enough with the ball when we had it.
"There's certain things we've got to look at here, because we certainly don't come out with the same tempo and the same determination in the second half, especially when we're ahead. It's something we need to find a solution to."
Lewes boss Steve Ibbotson told BBC Sussex: "We were struggling to cope with their full backs coming from deep and making late runs. We changed our formation around a bit in the second half.
"We went 4-3-3 and that nullified them but to a degree it nullified us as well. We had more of the play than in the first half but we didn't create any chances."
