Striker Marvin Morgan's late winner gave Aldershot their first win of the season against Southend.
Morgan capitalised after Shrimpers goalkeeper Glenn Morris spilled Antony Straker's shot.
But former Shots striker Louis Soares spurned a number of good opportunities for the visitors.
He had one effort cleared off the line by Darren Jones and then should have done better but fired wide from close range late in the second half.
Aldershot manager Kevin Dillon told BBC Surrey: "Spencer was involved in everything when he came on and the substitutions certainly affected the game.
"Teams will come and sit this season and try and hit us on the break and it's up to us to try and move the ball a little bit quicker.
"We just couldn't create many chances, but once we scored we had three or four. It was exciting it at the end, I enjoyed it, and it was a relief to get the win. I thought we defended superbly."
Southend United manager Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex: "Nobody likes to lose. It was always going to be a mistake at either end that decided this game.
"It was a test for us to see if we had the metal of a team in the play-offs and I didn't think we looked out of sorts.
"If we can tidy ourselves up we'll win some of those games rather than lose them."
