Veteran Steve Ward makes Chelmsford City exit

Chelmsford City

Defender Steve Ward has left Chelmsford City to return to Canvey Island.

Ward, who spent four years with Chelmsford, returns to the club where made almost 500 appearances in his first spell, which began in 1996.

Meanwhile, as Ward departs, six more Clarets players have signed on for the 2010/11 Blue Square Bet South season.

They are goalkeeper Lewis Batchford, defenders Ben Nunn and Ryan Batchford, midfielder Anthony Cook and strikers Rob Edmans and Tyrone Scarlett.

Ward and forward Ricky Holmes are the high-profile departures from the club this summer.

Holmes was released in May so he could pursue a career in the professional game, and has since completed a move to League Two Barnet.

Chelmsford have missed out on promotion to the Blue Square Premier in the end-of-season play-offs in each of the last two seasons.
