Chelmsford City have released forward Ricky Holmes, just days after announcing he was staying at the club.
Last week, the Clarets said the striker was one of eight players who was being kept on.
But the Blue Square South side have now revealed he has been released to pursue a career at a higher level.
Chairman Mansell Wallace told the club's website: "It would've been wrong to hold Ricky back so we've tried to act in his best interests."
Holmes was Chelmsford's top scorer last season, netting 15 times in their league campaign, which ended in a defeat by Bath City in the play-offs.
Wallace has not ruled out Holmes coming back to the club.
"He has given us years of good service and if he doesn't secure a contract elsewhere then he is more than welcome to return in the summer," he said.
