Southport manager Liam Watson demands team discipline

Southport

Southport manager Liam Watson wants his players to keep their discipline as they fight for the Blue Square North title.

Watson's side are two points behind Fleetwood Town but have a game in hand.

"Football is a game where if you keep your discipline you tend to get better results," he told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"You always start with a point, so don't give it away and if you've got enough up front, you'll turn more one points into three points."

Southport managed a late 3-3 draw with Droylsden on Saturday and Watson believes mental errors cost his side all three points.

"When people start panicking for a result that's when they lose their discipline," Watson said. "Unfortunately that's what happened to us against Droylsden.

"People talk about nerves but I don't think it comes down to nerves, I think it comes down to discipline.

"Once you set foot on a football pitch nerves don't play a part, but I do certainly think keeping your discipline, your shape and being hard to beat [is important]."

Southport's next match is the trip to Gloucester on Tuesday night and with Fleetwood not playing until Thursday, the Sandgrounders can claim top spot with a win.
