New Welling boss will also play

Welling United

New Welling United manager Jamie Day has confirmed that he will also play for the Blue Square South club.

The 30-year-old, who has left Ryman League Dartford to take up the post, played 138 games for the Wings between 2004 and 2007.

He told BBC Radio Kent: "I will hopefully be involved in all games.

"If I am playing well I will play, but if I am not playing well and players around me are playing better I would be happy to watch from the side."

Day's appointment was finally confirmed on Friday night after Welling agreed a compensation deal with Dartford.

Day, who attended training at Dartford on Thursday night - the day after he was initially appointed Welling manager - feared the deal might not go through.

He said: "There was a stage on Friday morning when I thought maybe it might not happen, but eventually both clubs sorted something out.

"I'm glad it got sorted out and we can move ahead."

Defender Lee Protheroe had taken temporary charge following Andy Ford's departure, overseeing Saturday's win over Worcester, which Day watched from the stands.

Day said: "I'll sit down with Lee next week. He has done a fantastic job since he took over. I will bring in my own assistant but if I can find a role for Lee I will look along those lines."
