Gill's experience is key for Reds

Blue Square North

Redditch United manager Gary Whild believes new signing Jerry Gill's experience will help bolster his side's fortunes in Blue Square North.

The Reds boss hopes the 39-year-old defender's arrival will help his side move out of the relegation zone.

He told BBC Hereford and Worcester: "I'm sure he is exactly what we need as we do need an experienced player."

Gill, whose former clubs include Birmingham and Northampton, left Cheltenham at the end of last season.

He began his career in non-league football and said he had no qualms about playing at a lower level.

"My career has gone full circle in that I started at 16 in the Beazer Homes League and had a good career in the professional game but now I have come out of the back of it," he said.

"This is a club that wants to go places and everything is done right so hopefully I can help stabilise it a little bit and maybe push it up the league.

The Reds go into Saturday's home match against Workington in the relegation places, but Whild says they have confounded the critics before and is confident they can do it again.

"We're under no illusions about where we are," he said. "Somebody said in the week that they thought we would get relegated.

"They have been saying that since we came into the league so we understand that.

"One win can change things and there is no reason why that should not be on Saturday."

Redditch United will entertain Workington on Saturday, 19 September and there will be reaction to the game as part of Sport on Saturday from 1400 BST on BBC Hereford and Worcester.
