Scarborough sack first-team pair

Scarborough Athletic

Scarborough Athletic have sacked two players after incidents in their FA Cup tie against Guisborough Town.

The club said the actions of Jamie Waltham and Scott Phillips on Sunday showed a lack of respect.

Club chairman Simon Cope told BBC Radio York: "The club has decided that both Jamie and Scott will no longer play for Scarborough Athletic in the future.

"It doesn't reflect well on what we've been trying to do as a club and we're very disappointed in the pair of them."

Waltham is reported to have been dragged away from the referee after being shown a red card leaving him with a ripped shirt.

Phillips allegedly stormed off the pitch throwing his shirt to the ground after being substituted.

Cope said: "It was tough but what made it easy was that myself, the director of football and the team manager were all in agreement on what action need to be taken.

"It is tough though, especially two players who have been very influential for us in the past and both have been regular starters.

"You've got to show respect to the officials regardless of what they do.

We're going to be a bit light at the back but I think we'll be OK

Scarborough chairman Simon Cope

"Scott let his temper get the better of him I think. His reaction to being substituted wasn't what we expect. That's why we've had to take this action with the pair of them.

"We have no intention of becoming known for the wrong reasons - we want to be known for the right reasons."

Regardless of the incident on Sunday, Cope is still confident that the team will do well in the league this year and they will find replacements for the loss of the two players.

"Expectations are still high. Obviously this will have an unsettling effect on the team as a whole but we're trying to make the side stronger.

"We managed to sign a North Ferriby player (defender Danny Moore). He signed registration forms at the match on Sunday.

"The manager is already out there actively trying to find new payers.

"I think even with what's gone on we'll still be OK. We're going to be a bit light at the back but I think we'll be OK."
