Powell confident in title chances

Southport

Southport vice-captain Michael Powell believes the Sandgrounders are the team to beat in the Blue Square North.

The defender was part of the Southport team, which reached the play-offs last season and now aims to go one better.

"Practically every home game, everyone is going to want to come and beat us so we need to be at it right from the start," he told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"We definitely need to be hoping to win the league. I don't think there's anything for us to fear."

Powell does concede his side's home form could be key to their title aspirations along with the form of Fleetwood Town.

"If you want to win the League you have to do well at home," he said.

"Last year that wasn't the case, we picked a lot more points up away but we've got to improve at home.

"Fleetwood have gone out and spent a lot of money but we've nothing to fear really."

Southport's Blue Square North game with Gloucester City kicks off at 1500 BST at Haig Avenue on Saturday.
