Watson not ready to concede title

Southport

Southport manager Liam Watson believes his side can still win the Blue Square North title despite losing 1-0 to top-of-the-table Tamworth on Tuesday.

The Sandgrounders are now nine points behind Tamworth following defeat at Haig Avenue but do have two games in hand on the West Midlands side.

"There's still 24 points to play for," Watson told BBC Radio Merseyside.

"If we get 24 points it puts pressure on everyone else. There'll be twists and turns before the season finishes."

Nick Wright's 34th-minute strike gave Tamworth the 1-0 victory at Southport, sending the Lambs to the summit of Blue Square North in the process.

Watson could not hide his frustration at the manner in which his side conceded the decisive goal.

"It was an awful goal to give away," he said.

"It stemmed from outside the box and was a joke of a goal to give away but we still had enough of the game to kick on and go and salvage something from it.

"To be honest we probably didn't show enough."
