James Adams has now hit more than 700 first-class runs this season

James Adams was the main Hampshire contributor on a rain-ruined first day against Lancashire at The Rose Bowl.

The Hampshire opener was unbeaten on 82 out of 144-2 after the weather intervened to force an early finish.

Kyle Hogg took both wickets to fall after Hampshire had won the toss and chosen to bat.

Hogg accounted for Michael Carberry (33), after he had shared an opening stand of 65 with Adams, then also ex- Lancashire skipper John Crawley (21).

But in-form Adams, who has now scored more than 700 first-class runs this season, was the key figure in the 47 overs managed before rain intruded early in the afternoon session of the Division One clash.

Despite pace bowler Chris Tremlett being unable to play because of a neck injury, Hampshire again chose to leave out former Lancashire all-rounder Dominic Cork, as well as Michael Lumb.

Opponents Lancashire, already weakened by the loss of England duo James Anderson and Andrew Flintoff, were further weakened by the absence of captain Glen Chapple and Sajid Mahmood. And that meant a Championship debut for slow left-arm bowler Stephen Parry.
