Alfreton Town boosted their hopes of clinching a Blue Square North play-off spot with victory at Stafford Rangers.
The Reds got off to a flying start when Kyle McFadzean headed them ahead from Ian Ross's corner within 90 seconds.
Stuart Pierpoint hit the bar for Town before Ross made it 2-0 when he followed up his own weak penalty to shoot home after McFadzean was felled.
David McNiven hit the woodwork twice for the home side as they rallied in the final stages, but Alfreton held on.
Nicky Law's side remain in sixth spot, one place and three points off the play-offs and they also have a game in hand on fifth-placed Stalybridge Celtic.
The Reds are next in action on Saturday when they are away against Workington Town.
