AFC Telford United's new striker Mark Danks has said he was pleased to make his debut in their 1-0 win over Blue Square North title rivals Tamworth.

Danks' appearance for Telford was a surprise for their opponents as his arrival had been kept quiet.

Reacting to their win Danks told BBC Radio Shropshire: "It was always going to be one of those games, working hard, doing the basics.

"It was nice to turn up and get on with the job."

Speaking about his surprise appearance he added: "I didn't want to speak to anyone about it and I think [manager] Rob Smith was the same.

"I don't know how it's not got out and about. Until I put pen to paper I didn't want to speak to anyone."

Telford narrowed the gap to just three points at the top of the Blue Square North after recording their second league win of 2009.

Danks had two efforts in the second half which were saved by Danny Alcock in an impressive debut for the club.

The 25-year-old started his career with Wolves as a trainee before making a move to Bradford City where he made just three league appearances as a substitute.

Danks was part of Hednesford's 2004 FA Trophy winning side and scored 16 goals for Southern League Premier Division side Halesowen this season before his move to Telford.

In the only other fixture to be played in the Blue Square North, fellow promotion contenders Southport beat Hyde 2-0 to stay third with Telford in fourth place.
