Harrogate Town general manager Alan Williams has said the club is stable and debt-free after placing the entire playing squad on the transfer list.
The squad last week declined to take a pay-cut that was requested by the club.
"It's just economics, it's what any business or any company will be doing," said Williams.
"The chairman's been forced into this position, they've refused to help him, so he has been forced to cut the wage bill by selling players."
Williams added that chairman, Bill Fotherby, is working hard to make sure that Harrogate do not slip into financial difficulty.
"The chairman is determined it won't happen to Harrogate Town," said Williams.
"He owes a debt to the fans who pay week-in, week-out to come in and see the club.
"It would be unfair to them for the club to get into trouble, and the chairman wants to make sure that Harrogate Town is still here at the end of the season, next season and the season after that," he added.
