Hughes backs Knights to flourish

York City Knights

York City Knights new team captain Paul Hughes says his team are full of confidence ahead of the new season and will be aiming for promotion.

The 24-year-old was handed the role in just his second season with the club.

Hughes told BBC Radio York: "We're hoping for promotion and we'll be working towards that.

"We've had a great pre-season and we're building for the season. In training we're looking good, we're looking strong and very organised."

The Knights finished last year strongly in National League Two and Hughes said they are capable of competing with the best this year.

"I know a lot of people who play at different sides like Dewsbury and Oldham, I've been to watch them play but I don't really see much of a threat.

"We've got a really good squad building here so to be honest I'm focussing on ourselves and I think it'll be the same as last year," he added.

"I think we could do a job on anyone of the sides. It's just about sticking together and staying injury free really."
