Chairman tips Stafford to survive

Stafford Rangers

Stafford chairman John Downing has said he is taking the right steps to prevent the club from going out of business.

The Rangers board have implemented cost-cutting measures, including asking the players to take a pay cut - a request that has been rejected.

Downing told BBC Radio Stoke: "We're responsible people and have to put the club first.

"The takings are not enough to pay the players' wages but we still have a balance sheet so we're doing alright."

The proposed cut in player wages has already resulted in David MacPherson and Carl Palmer leaving Marston Road.

Stafford's income has been affected by last season's relegation from the Blue Square Premier and a poor runs in this season's cup competitions.

However, Downing insists the measures that the club have taken will see them come through the other side of a financial crisis unscathed.

"We're trying to run the club within it's means," said Downing.

"We don't want to run it for another six months like this and then see the club go bust."
