Daley's brace opens Reds' account

Redditch United picked up their first win of the Blue Square North season with a 3-1 home success over Farsley Celtic on Saturday.

Reds manager Gary Whild told BBC Hereford and Worcester the win was no more than his players deserved.

"The performances have been OK, especially in the three drawn games away from home," said Whild.

"Today the lads got what they deserved for those performances and they were good value for the win."

Liam Daley put the Reds ahead after only seven minutes, but they were pegged back just after the half-hour mark when Anthony Campbell levelled for Farsley.

The turning point came as the game was heading into first-half stoppage time when Aman Verna restored the Reds' lead.

Whild felt that Verna had played a key part in the win and he believed that the youngster deserved his chance in the starting line-up.

"He did brilliantly for a 20-year-old," said Whild. "He came on at half-time against Tamworth and had a big influence there when we got back into the game.

We always try and do our homework and we had done that for today which led to us causing them problems down their left-hand side

"I thought he was brilliant for the 90 minutes today and thoroughly deserved his goal, while he also got us a penalty."

Verna was brought down for the decisive third Redditch goal and Daley kept his cool to net from the spot.

After two home defeats in which they had failed to score it was vital for Redditch that they opened their account, and Whild felt their research into how Farsley play the game had paid rich dividends.

"We always try and do our homework and we had done that for today which led to us causing them problems down their left-hand side.

"We were always going to try and do that with Owen Storey, so the scouting paid off."

Redditch have a chance to make it back-to-back home wins on Tuesday when they take on bottom-of-the-table Hucknall Town at Valley Stadium.

There will be reports on the game in BBC Hereford and Worcester's evening programmes on 104, 104.4 and 104.6 FM, as well as online.
