Wilding was booed by some City fans on Monday

Worcester City's manager Richard Dryden has called on a section of the home support to stop booing Craig Wilding.

Dryden told BBC Hereford and Worcester he can't understand why supporters would want to do that to one of their own players.

"If he wasn't so strong a character, he would probably just fold and that doesn't help anybody," he said.

"I don't understand why some people come and hammer one player from the start, as it doesn't help him or me."

It was to be a frustrating Bank Holiday Monday afternoon for City who went down 1-0 at home to Bath City in a game determined by the outcome of two penalties.

Graham Ward's challenge on the Bath striker Stuart Douglas in the final minute of the first period proved costly as the referee pointed to the spot and Douglas picked himself up to give Bath the lead.

Worcester had a great chance to level in the second period when Wilding was fouled and the official again awarded a penalty, but Mark Owen's spot kick was beaten away by the visiting goalkeeper.

Owen's strike partner Marco Adaggio has proved a real hit with St George's Lane fans so far this season, but they would all have gone home after the game wondering how the striker failed to score from the rebound when he skied his shot over an open goal from only six yards.

Richard Dryden admitted it had been a difficult day, but said it only underlined that the side has to start games well, as they had not deserved anything from their first-half performance.

"In the first half the passion and tempo wasn't there, while the work rate certainly wasn't there," he said.

"The work rate was good and the tempo was up, but if you don't do that for 90 minutes, then you are going to get beaten," he added.

Worcester City wil return to action on Saturday 30 August when they will make the trip to Bromley for a Blue Square South fixture.
