Truro City name McCarthy as boss

Truro City

Truro City have appointed former Plymouth Argyle, Bradford City and Swansea striker Sean McCarthy as their new manager.

He replaces Dave Leonard, who resigned towards the end of last season following the club's decision not to go fully professional.

McCarthy has previously worked on the coaching staff at Portsmouth and lives in Ivybridge in Devon.

He scored over 150 goals in a league career which spanned nearly 20 years.

He also played for Exeter City, but is probably best remembered for his time at Bradford.

He joined the Bantams from Plymouth Argyle for 250,000 in the summer of 1990. While there he scored 60 goals in 141 games and was top scorer for four seasons in a row from 1990.

Oldham Athletic then snapped him up for 500,000 in December 1993 before leaving the club for a second spell at Plymouth Argyle on a free transfer in August 1998.

Three years later he moved to Exeter City before retiring at the club after the 2002/03 season.

McCarthy's main task will be to continue Truro City's dramatic rise up the football pyramid.

They have won three promotions in a row seeing them go from the old Southwestern league up to the Southern League First Division West, where they will play next season.

Last season they won the Western League at a canter, scoring more points than any other championship-winning side.
