| Santos head for first title ![]() Jomo Cosmos are the only side who have challenged Cape Town club Santos are nearly certain of their first South African league championship. They need only a point from Wednesday's away match with Umtata Bush Bucks. Santos are ten points ahead of second-placed Mamelodi Sundowns, although it is Jomo Cosmos who are the only team capable of catching them as they have games in hand.
Cosmos only have a chance if Santos lose both their remaining matches and they win all four they have left. Even then, they must win by substantial margins as their goal difference is inferior. If Santos do take the title, it will be the third in five years for coach Gordon Igesund, all with different clubs. Igesund took the title with Durban club Manning Rangers in 1997 and with Orlando Pirates last season. | See also: 10 Apr 02 | Africa 17 Apr 02 | CAF club competitions 09 Apr 02 | Africa Top CAF club competitions stories now: Links to more CAF club competitions stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
