Senegal's Khalilou Fadiga made his English Premiership debut for Bolton in the 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday. The midfielder, who has overcome an irregular heart-beat, made his bow as a second-half replacement for fellow countryman El Hadji Diouf.
Fadiga seemed determined to make an impression and was unlucky not to give Bolton a more convincing victory when his fizzing long-range effort flew just over.
Fadiga's career has been on hold for the past 18 months after the 29-year-old midfielder was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat which required surgery in Belgium.
The problem forced Italian side Inter Milan to terminate his contract in the summer.
Fadiga left Inter without a single first-team start to his name after joining them from French club Auxerre at the start of last season.
"I had a few offers but I chose to come to Bolton because I already have some friends here and I have a very good feeling with Sam Allardyce," he said.
"When you go for a job, the people have to show they want you and Sam did that.
"For me, Bolton is a very good team, with good players.
"I hope to be in the team every Saturday or Sunday," Fadiga said.
The midfielder hopes he can play a role in Bolton's plan to emerge as a new force in the English game.
"It would be a very nice season if we went towards the top of the Premier League.
"I have a lot of experience but football is like life, every day you learn.
"I am not afraid about the demands of the Premiership.
"When I left France for Belgium people told me I was being stupid. But I was a champion at Brugge and everything was perfect.
"People also told me not to go to Auxerre because it was a boring city but I had three years with a very good team.
"And before I went to Inter, people kept telling me how difficult it would be.
"People only try to help but ultimately the decision of where I go to is mine.
"Up to now, I have made good decisions and I think I have made another one in deciding to come to Bolton," Fadiga said.
