DR Congo striker Shabani Nonda says his best is yet to come |
The DR Congo and Monaco striker Shabani Nonda says that he is far from his best form following seven months out through injury. The 27-year-old was talking ahead of the European Champions League semi-final second leg clash against England's Chelsea on Wednesday.
Nonda, who was the top scorer in the French first division last season, picked up a knee injury on 27 August after a challenge from Paris St Germain defender and former team mate Jose Karl Pierre-Fanfan.
Nonda came back on 2 April to score a goal and set up another as he inspired Monaco to a remarkable comeback from three goals down to snatch a 3-3 home draw against AC Ajaccio.
Since then the Congolese striker has hit the woodwork during Monaco's 3-1 Champions League victory over Real Madrid and scored in his team's 3-1 home win against Chelsea in the semi-final first leg two weeks ago.
Despite this impressive form Nonda is adamant that he still has a long way to go to get back to his very best.
"Despite the goals I've scored, I'm still far from my best level," Nonda said in a French newspaper.
"I still have the instinct for goals, when I'm in front of goal, I'm like an animal, everything is instinctive.
"But when it comes to running, to reading the game, I'm only at 50 percent."
Nonda said he did not want to think about a possible Champions League final on 26 May in Germany just yet.
"People say being two goals up after the first leg is huge but we know one thing we're going to suffer as we've never suffered (at Stamford Bridge in second leg).
"So if we go to the final it will be unbelievable," he added.
