Enyimba are seeking to become the first NIgerian team to win the club title |
Whether it is a first crown for Nigeria or a hat-trick for Egypt, history will be made in the 2003 edition of the Champions League. Enyimba and Ismaili are the two clubs ready to battle it out for African glory over two legs, the first on Sunday.
Enyimba, the first Nigerian side to reach the final, secured their passage with victory over USM Alger, while Ismaili overcame Tunisian favourites Esperance.
And while it may be both teams' debut in the continental club final, it is not their first meeting in the competition. Paired together in the round robin pre-semi-final group stage, they each scored a victory - Ismaili 6-1 in Egypt and Enyimba a group-topping 4-2 in Aba - on the rocky road to the final.
With Zamalek and Al Ahly bringing the trophy back to the land of the pharaohs in the past two seasons, Ismaili must start the final as favourites.
But since that crushing 6-1 defeat, the Nigerians have been impressive and look set to welcome back their two star forwards for the decisive ties.
The competition's top marksman Joetex Frimpong, injured for the past two months, and last season's leading scorer Victor Ezeji, on trial with a Danish club, have returned to training, leaving coach Kadiri Ikhana with a bit of a headache over team selection.
Ismaili have a potent attacking duo of their own in Mohamed Mohsen Abougreisha and Dramane Traore.
Ismaili hope to make it an Eygpt hat-trick |
The pair have scored 14 goals between them in the Champions League this year. Traore is the competition's top scorer with eight. But coach Theo Bucker is without a number of other key players, including two talented youngsters who are playing at the Youth World Cup in the United Arab Emirites.
He also has three players suspended.
"We are taking a much weaker side," he told the BBC website.
"Because of this it will be very lucky to win this match."
